Deconstruction of vermal cerebellum in
ramp locomotion in mice

Dr. Li discusses how the cerebellum is involved in encoding balance, posture, speed, and gravity during locomotion. Most studies have been carried out on flat surfaces, and little is known about cerebellar activity during free ambulation on slopes. He shows how his group imaged the neuronal activity of cerebellar molecular interneurons (MLIs) and Purkinje cells (PCs) using the Inscopix miniscope while a mouse was walking on a slope and how his study reveals a novel microcircuit in the vermal cerebellum regulates ambulatory behavior in three-dimensional terrains.
